IE6 CRash CrAsh CrASh again & again & again

This problem keeps re-occurring: (On my Dell 4600/XP SP-2) I will have a few
IE 6 browser windows open, then usually one of them will freeze, then CPU
usage spikes to 100% - causing the computer to take several minutes to
perform the simplest operations. I usually have to (wait for) the task
manager to open so I can close out of IE – although often, the problem is
still there so I have to reboot the system. I have been trying in-vein for
months to correct this.

I have Spybot, Ad-aware, HJT, Awido, Spywareblaster, SpywareGuard, My
computer is protected by CA eTrust security suite, I have cleaned, error
detected & defragged the HD several times and run sfc /scannow… Nothing
works!

Here are some forum links to everything I have tried to date:

As far as I can tell, with all of the scans, cleanings, and deletions, my
machine is free of viruses and spyware & maleware. Can anyone fix this?

Hi :)

Well...it looks like your cleaning process has been very complete, so, let's
examine some other areas that may not have been addressed yet.

What kind of sites are you opening when the crash happens? By that I mean,
are you going to secure sites? Sites with lots of images and/or graphics or
animation? Game sites with lots of
Flash or Shockwave? These types of sites can cause IE to crash for various
reasons.

Try the following and see if it helps:

Clearing the TIF Cache -
Safely Delete the Temporary Internet Files
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm
Delete Off-Line files as well

or.

How to Delete the Contents of the Temporary Internet Files Folder
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;260897
Delete view off-line files not the pages File, Save as.

If TIF is much larger than 50 MB, IE starts to slow down because it's
actually faster to get the information from the Internet than to find it in
TIF. In addition, you start losing the ability to save pictures as anything
but a BMP and you lose the ability to View | Source. Unfortunately, as far
as I know IE still by default grabs some percentage of the drive for TIF and
for large drives this is way too much. 50 MB seems to be about the best.

Update your Video driver:

If you don't know the location of your Video driver, or how to find it:
Location for XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q314854
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/games/learnmore/updatingdrivers.mspx
or......
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q314854
Find the information on your video driver. Then go to the website for mfg.
of the video driver and look for the update to download and install. There
may also be a Update Driver button on the dialog box you can use to go
direct to the update download site.

also........

Try reducing hardware acceleration:
Right click on the Desktop on an open area,
Properties>Settings>Advanced>Troubleshoot
Move the slider back to the left a little and test to see if that helps.
Try it at increments until you get all the way to the left end to see if
that helps.

You should also update your scripting engine. The latest scripting engine
can
be found at:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/downloads/list/webdev.asp

For 2000 and XP go to
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...43-7e4b-4622-86eb-95a22b832caa&DisplayLang=en
The install includes a new jscript.dl

Hope this helps.

Hi, I'm having the same problem. My home page has an auto-refresh feature,
which works fine until I open or maximize some other program, like Outlook
Express. then when I go back to home page, it's hung and IE6 is hung. I can
close out, start over, and everything works until the next time. I'm running
Norton Internet Security, with my home page as a trusted site. I've also had
the CPU max box lite up and minutes to do one Excel operation. This just
started within the last week or so. I don't think I changed any settings. We
have 2 computers running alike, same XP w/SP2, and it doesn't happen on the
other one, but it has Norton Anti-virus only. Any clues? WFC

Hi WFC :)

Is the Auto_Protect enabled on the Norton AV? If so, Check the Task Manager
and see if
NAVAPSVC.EXE is there. If so, disable it and see if the spikes stop.

also.. when the CPU starts spiking, open the task manager and click on
Processes and see what is using up your power. See what top 5 files are
using most of the power post them here. If you are unable to open the task
manager when your cpu is spiking, then download and install this free
utility program. When your CPU is spiking, run it and see what is causing
the spike at taht moment.
Explorer Processor
http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/procexp.shtml

and..

Go to Start>Run and then enter the following in the window
sfc /scannow, and then click OK. (notice the space between the sfc and /)
You will need to have your XP install CD handy.

That takes a while, but it'l check that all the files are intact, in the
right location and working properly, the chances are that doing this will
fix it.

Hope this helps.

Jan,

Thanks much for the advice.

To my knowledge, most of the sites I am visiting are not secure. Often the
sites I visit do have images; however they usually consist of regular html
and JPG files. Only on occasion do these sites contain Flash or Shockwave.
I often visit php forum sites, along with search engines such as Yahoo and
Google – it is usually with these types of sites that IE will crash. This is
especially the case after using the “open in new window†feature; so I can
keep the search results in one window while viewing the link results with
others.

I have the CCleaner program, and have used it logged-in as administrator.
Also, I reduced the TIF size to 50 MB (windows method). The Driver Update
Wizard reported that there was no better driver available for NVIDIA GeForce
FX 5200.
I have reduced hardware acceleration and have downloaded scripting engine
5.6.

It may take a few days to find out if these actions have the desired affect
on IE, so we’ll see. From what I hear, even from Microsoft’s own columnists
- IE is rather unstable (as is the OS). Although when I got my machine about
a year ago, it was much more fast, stable & efficient. For the amount of
money I paid, I wish that performance level could be maintained.

best,

Sean

This problem keeps re-occurring: (On my Dell 4600/XP SP-2) I will have
a
few
IE 6 browser windows open, then usually one of them will freeze, then
CPU
usage spikes to 100% - causing the computer to take several minutes to
perform the simplest operations. I usually have to (wait for) the task
manager to open so I can close out of IE - although often, the problem
is
still there so I have to reboot the system. I have been trying in-vein
for
months to correct this.

I have Spybot, Ad-aware, HJT, Awido, Spywareblaster, SpywareGuard, My
computer is protected by CA eTrust security suite, I have cleaned,
error
detected & defragged the HD several times and run sfc /scannow.
Nothing
works!

Here are some forum links to everything I have tried to date:

As far as I can tell, with all of the scans, cleanings, and deletions,
my
machine is free of viruses and spyware & maleware. Can anyone fix
this?

Hi Sean :)

There are many reasons why a machine can slow down over time that are not
related to any OS. A good regular maintenance routine will help keep a
machine running at it's productivity. I wuld imagine that in the beginning
you did not have a many programs on your machine as you may have now as
well.

Here are a few things that you can do on a regular basis that will help keep
your machine lean and mean and running at it's best.

Disk maintenance (scan and defrag)
Delete TIF's and Cookies
Keep your Startup programs to just the few necessary to startup your system.
Check out the information here:
What loads at Startup.and what do you really need
http://cybercoyote.org/help/startpgm.htm
http://www2.whidbey.net/djdenham/index.hm
http://www2.whidbey.net/djdenham/Uncheck.htm

Limit any 3rd party programs such as toolbars, popup blockers and
'assistant' type programs as they can use resources.
Check for adware and spyware regularly, as even the 'harmless' can affect
the performance of your system.
Follow the mfg. recommended maintenance for your machine to keep it running
problem free.
Check fans and cables for wear and overhearing.

Just a few of the many ways you can improve and maintain the performance of
your machine, and programs.

Hope this helps.

Jan,

Thanks much for the advice.

To my knowledge, most of the sites I am visiting are not secure. Often
the
sites I visit do have images; however they usually consist of regular html
and JPG files. Only on occasion do these sites contain Flash or
Shockwave.
I often visit php forum sites, along with search engines such as Yahoo and
Google - it is usually with these types of sites that IE will crash. This
is
especially the case after using the "open in new window" feature; so I can
keep the search results in one window while viewing the link results with
others.

I have the CCleaner program, and have used it logged-in as administrator.
Also, I reduced the TIF size to 50 MB (windows method). The Driver Update
Wizard reported that there was no better driver available for NVIDIA
GeForce
FX 5200.
I have reduced hardware acceleration and have downloaded scripting engine
5.6.

It may take a few days to find out if these actions have the desired
affect
on IE, so we'll see. From what I hear, even from Microsoft's own
columnists
- IE is rather unstable (as is the OS). Although when I got my machine
about
a year ago, it was much more fast, stable & efficient. For the amount of
money I paid, I wish that performance level could be maintained.

Hi WFC :)

Is the Auto_Protect enabled on the Norton AV? If so, Check the Task
Manager
and see if
NAVAPSVC.EXE is there. If so, disable it and see if the spikes stop.

also.. when the CPU starts spiking, open the task manager and click on
Processes and see what is using up your power. See what top 5 files are
using most of the power post them here. If you are unable to open the
task
manager when your cpu is spiking, then download and install this free
utility program. When your CPU is spiking, run it and see what is
causing
the spike at taht moment.
Explorer Processor
http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/procexp.shtml

and..

Go to Start>Run and then enter the following in the window
sfc /scannow, and then click OK. (notice the space between the sfc and
/)
You will need to have your XP install CD handy.

That takes a while, but it'l check that all the files are intact, in the
right location and working properly, the chances are that doing this will
fix it.

Hope this helps.

Hi, I'm having the same problem. My home page has an auto-refresh
feature,
which works fine until I open or maximize some other program, like
Outlook
Express. then when I go back to home page, it's hung and IE6 is hung. I
can
close out, start over, and everything works until the next time. I'm
running
Norton Internet Security, with my home page as a trusted site. I've
also
had
the CPU max box lite up and minutes to do one Excel operation. This
just
started within the last week or so. I don't think I changed any
settings.
We
have 2 computers running alike, same XP w/SP2, and it doesn't happen on
the
other one, but it has Norton Anti-virus only. Any clues? WFC

Hi :)

Well...it looks like your cleaning process has been very complete, so,
let's
examine some other areas that may not have been addressed yet.

What kind of sites are you opening when the crash happens? By that I
mean,
are you going to secure sites? Sites with lots of images and/or
graphics
or
animation? Game sites with lots of
Flash or Shockwave? These types of sites can cause IE to crash for
various
reasons.

Try the following and see if it helps:

Clearing the TIF Cache -
Safely Delete the Temporary Internet Files
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm
Delete Off-Line files as well

or.

How to Delete the Contents of the Temporary Internet Files Folder
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;260897
Delete view off-line files not the pages File, Save as.

If TIF is much larger than 50 MB, IE starts to slow down because it's
actually faster to get the information from the Internet than to find
it
in
TIF. In addition, you start losing the ability to save pictures as
anything
but a BMP and you lose the ability to View | Source. Unfortunately,
as
far
as I know IE still by default grabs some percentage of the drive for
TIF
and
for large drives this is way too much. 50 MB seems to be about the
best.

Update your Video driver:

If you don't know the location of your Video driver, or how to find
it:
Location for XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q314854
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/games/learnmore/updatingdrivers.mspx
or......
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q314854
Find the information on your video driver. Then go to the website for
mfg.
of the video driver and look for the update to download and install.
There
may also be a Update Driver button on the dialog box you can use to go
direct to the update download site.

also........

Try reducing hardware acceleration:
Right click on the Desktop on an open area,
Properties>Settings>Advanced>Troubleshoot
Move the slider back to the left a little and test to see if that
helps.
Try it at increments until you get all the way to the left end to see
if
that helps.

You should also update your scripting engine. The latest scripting
engine
can
be found at:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/downloads/list/webdev.asp

For 2000 and XP go to
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...43-7e4b-4622-86eb-95a22b832caa&DisplayLang=en
The install includes a new jscript.dl

Hope this helps.

Hi,
Your problems are so much like what is happening on my PC that I could have
written it myself !
I use the same programs as you & also have a Dell. My browser even freezes
on Microsft sites ! I had Norton but it was giving me grief (blocking e-mail
send & receives, useless customer support) so I uninstalled it (which also
went curly) & now it won't reinstall whether I wanted it to or not.
My PC is clean on all scan fronts - antivirus & adware.
I have also defragged.
In my opinion either :
1) automatic update has some changes to IE which do not agree with
Dell/XP2/Pro
2) a reg cleaner is over zealous & cleans out something that IE needs

At least it is nice to know I am not alone in this dilema.

(My browser has locked about 10 times while I have been trying to write this
!)
