IE won't save gif

I've had this happen with XP on 2 machines. I'm browsing a site and right
click an image to save it to disk but it will only save the image as a
bitmap. I can't save the image as gif or jpeg even though the original image
is one of these formats. Any ideas?

Clear the Temporary Internet Files. In IE>Tools>Internet Options>
Delete Files button. And check the box to Delete Offline content.

Out of curiosity, what is the reason for this?

I don't know the technical reason. But that is something that should
be done on a regular basis just like Defragging and compacting
folders in OE. Just another maintenance procedure to keep your
computer running smoothly.
