IE will not start up.

My Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) will not run. If I
click on the IE icon on my toolbar or double click on the
desktop IE icon, I get an hourglass for a second and then
nothing happens. If I try entering "C:\Program
Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE" in my run command,
the same thing happens.

This happened suddenly 2 days ago. It worked fine in the
am and when I returned in the afternoon, IE would not work.
Nothing was installed or was running durring this time. I
have an updated antivirus (Mcaffee) and Firewall (Norton)
running all the time. I have done a virus scan and I am clean.

I have tried repairing IE using the Run command provided on
your website and nothing changed. I tried reinstalling IE
6 and nothing changes. I am unable to uninstall because
when I couble click on the w2kexcp icon, nothing happens.

When I open My Computer and then click the address tab, I
am able to scroll down and click on the IE icon there and
my home website comes up and IE works normally until a
website tries to open another IE and then IE locks up and
does not respond.

If I click on the Windows Update icon in my start menu,
nothing happens.

I have full updates on my Windows 2000 Pro and my hard
drive is defragged and error free. My Windows 2000
version is 5.00.2195 and I am running service pack 4.

I have Ad-aware, spybot and REgistry mechanic and have run
all of them with no change in the problem.

I am out of ideas other than totally reloading windows. I
do not want to do this as I would have to back up 20+gig of
programs and memory that I do not want to risk loosing.
Please help me.
