IE 6 will not start first time. Only second instance does...

I have just completely reinstalled my system after some hardware upgrades and
now I am seeing a strange issue starting IE.

Once XP has fully started and I double click the desktop IE icon or click
the Quick start Icon, nothing happens. However if I call up the task manager
I can see that iexplorer.exe is running. If I try to start IE again it will
start.

If I shutdown all of the iexplorer.exe processes running, IE will once again
not start on the first attempt but will start on any following attempts.

Also if I click a hyperlink when no process is started then I get a dialog
requesting to select the correct executable. If however IE is running,
clicking a hyperlink will open an IE window as expected.

The system is running XPSP2 and I have installed all of the available
updates from Microsoft.

I've had the same issue. No icon would launch iexplore.exe. And I had
just used Auto Update. It turns out that turing of the 3rd party
extensions fixed it for me. Thanks a million!
