multiple launches of IE 6 to get one

When i click the IE shortcut button on my taskbar to launch internet
explorer, it doesnt launch and i need to launch it again (typically three
times).

Windows Task Manager shows multiple Iexplorer.exe running with various
memory usage. However, there is not other indication of IE running (4
processes running and only 1 IE window available).

When I shutdown my computer I have to shutdown multiple processes of IE
before it will close?

I have counted and for how many times i open it and it doesnt run, is how
many times i have to end the task on shutdown...

IE 6.0.2900.2180 updated version SP2

Win XP Professional

I run CA antivirus software, it is up to date and finds no viruses.
I also run LavaSoft AdWare.

Any thoughts on what the issue it and more importantly on how to fix it?

No, other than the fact that IE is flaky
