I use Windows XP. Everything was fine until my service provider had a problem
2 weeks ago where one of their cables was damaged affecting lots of users.
They confirmed that I was one of the people affected and that I would not be
able to get onto IE or Outlook until it was sorted When it was sorted though
I couldn't access either. When I tried to connect to IE I get a message that
broadband is connected but I get an error message saying "IE is unable to
display the webpage". I also cannot get E-mails via either outlook or outlook
express. When I try to connect I get the message that it cannot locate the
server. I contacted my service provider who said it wasn't a connection
problem - my browser was likely corrupt. I don't understand why as I can't
connect via outlook either. I have changed my modem - same problem. It's not
my phone line as I can connect via a friend laptop. Any suggestions? NB - I
cannot download any software.

Did your ISP walk you through any troubleshooting steps at all? Did
they get you to check the TCP/IP properties on your connection and
verify how the IP and DNS server addresses are obtained?

What it sounds like you need to do is to uninstall your network card and
reinstall it. You can do this from the device manager.

Certainly.

On your desktop you should have a my computer icon right click on this icon
and go to properties. Then click on the hardware tab and there you will see
the device manager. Open that up

I think about halfway down you should see an menu called Network adapters.
find yours right click on it and select uninstall then click okay on the
message. It will uninstall. From there right click on the very top item and
scan for hardware changes. your network card will be detected and reinstalled.

How to troubleshoot network connectivity problems in Internet Explorer

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)?

Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?
...I also cannot get E-mails via either
outlook or outlook express. When I try to connect I get the message that
it
cannot locate the server.

Post the complete (verbatim) error message(s) you're getting when you
attempt to Send/Receive.

McAfee was installed but removed nearly 2 years ago. IE 7.
Outlook message:

that you are online and the server name is correct. It also shows 1 task

Any ideas please?

In order:

1. Download the McAfee Consumer Products Removal Tool, saving it to your
desktop: http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507 (Step #2).

2. Double-click on the saved file to run the tool then reboot.

(You may need to use another computer to download the tool then transfer it
to the desktop of your computer via removable media [e.g., USB key; CD;
DVD].)

3. If the behavior persists, see if disabling the Bullguard Firewall *and
then enabling the Windows Firewall* makes any difference. (Do not connect
to the internet without a [one, only] firewall enabled!)

4. Assuming one or more of the above addresses the IE connection issues, see
if disabling Bullguard Anti-Virus's email scanner corrects the OL problem.

5. If still no joy, have your ISP come out and (re)check the line(s) leading
to your house and/or your in-home connection(s). After all, the problem
only started when "one of their cables was damaged" and they told you this
had affected you.

Hi, I downloaded the McAfee removal tool - ran it - and it worked!! I don't
understand how as McAfee was on my PC 3 years ago then removed 2 years ago
and yet everything worked fine up to now. Not really bothered though - as
long as everything is working now. Thanks PA Bear - I really appreciate your
help.
