IE stays loaded after window is closed

I noticed the problem when opening html files directly
from my PC. When I double-click the file, there is a delay
until it opens (several seconds). I checked on active
processes and found one iexplore.exe file for each IE
window I've opened and closed.
This doesn't happen when loading web pages directely over
the internet.

Make sure it's not caused by some spyware calling home.

IE 6.

Try this: Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Browsing
Uncheck the Enable 3rd party browser extensions

If this clears your problem then find out who the culprit(s) is/are with
these tools.
