IE problem

My wife and I have different user accounts. I use firefox browser, she
uses IE. today, when she started IE it was unable to get to any
websites. Also, when we would manually type in a url in the address
bar it was severely slow displaying one typed letter at a time with a
full second pause in between. I logged into my account and started IE
and had no problems, i was able to travel the web unfettered. So, I
logged back into her account and started task manager, then started IE,
I immediately noticed that CPU usage spiked to 100% and remained there
for several minutes and would not drop until I manually shut down IE.

I have run a virus scan under both accounts, finding nothing. I ran
adaware and found quite a few instances of tracking cookies, and one
possible browser hijack attempts.

Any thoughts?

That didnt fix it, but it lead me deeper into the mystery. I followed
your link and read the suggestion. I opened IE and stopped it looking
for her homepage. I then went to the manage add-ons as you suggested.
I clicked one of the links for the yahoo bar add-on, it took me to the
yahoo download section. I found this odd as I had not been able to get
even to yahoo.com earlier. So, I was curious and I clicked on the
favorites button, lo and behold it was empty. I know my wife has a
very large favorites folder because I had been using firefox in her
account to post to this site to get help and had seen her favorites in
firefox.

My assumption now is that IE is either corrupt or infected. I have run
a couple of virus scans and found nothing. Is there a way to reapir or
uninstall/reinstall IE by itself? As I said before, I checked IE in my
user account and it works fine.

Hi,

Make sure you are logged into her user account when checking plugins (as
obviously the problematic one is not affecting you). You can reinstall IE,
but if the problem isn't removed first it isn't going to fix it. If IE were
truly broken, it would affect your account as well.

When I go to manage add-ons in IE under her account the little
flashlight comes up and just wags back and forth looking for add-ons.
Eventually, I let it go for 10 minutes, it still has not found
anything. I tried to close down the search, I get a "not responding"
error. When I chose to send an error report it gave a link to send me
to the knowledge base. To my surprise this link worked and I was able
to go to the MS knowledge base and surf from there with no problem.
But nothing else about IE works right under her account.

Hi,

Let it go longer, one of the controls is definitely causing a problem. Make
sure you are not going through Tools/Internet Options in the browser, but
rather through the Control Panel while the browser is closed.

OK, I was trying thru the browser itself. Went into the control panel
Internet Options. Disabled all the non-microsoft add-ons, still nothing. I also compared the list of add-ons under her account and mine and there was no difference.

Thanx for the help so far.

Well, don't use IE. It is a p.o.s. anyways.
