IE often hangs

Hi. Using a broadband ISP with static address, XP SP2 and IE 6.0 (under XP
SP2) and have a problem. IE often hangs when either going to a new page from
another, when I use it to post to a forum, and take a while to write a post,
and for no reason at all. THe progress bar moves, occasionally till about
half way, or stops altogether. I can put the same address in FireFox and
bam, I am there. As you know, IE only works on some sites, especially ones
that have online tech help, so I need it (or else I'd just use FireFox).
I've read MS help pages, and even my own ISP that had me re-register about 6
..dll's that they said might cause problems. I did that and installed a few
things MS suggested, but it still is doing it.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Not that it will help, but I experience something much like you report,
though I use dial-up.

Watching the modem icons suggest that IE stopschecking back with the server
for some reason.

I have been told it is the modem driver--but that didn't pan out; anyhow, it
doesn't happen with OE, even in the same session or at the same time.

If I don't close down IE when this happens, eventually DUN drops the
connection, but, again, this doesn't happen with OE.

Scans for malware show nothing, checking exhaustively, though that's
unsurprising since it is dial-up, and most of my use of the browser is for
NOAA NWS, my wife looks at the Mt. Rainier website, and we use it for on
line ordering from known firms. Not high risk, in other words.

Keep hoping someone has something else to suggest than drivers and malware.
Not that it happens continuously. May not happen for a number of days in a
row. When it does, the only certain cure is shutting down and rebooting.

Realize this doesn't help you, but perhaps another post will jog someone.
