IE not working but still online

Can someone please give me some advice?

Whilst I was looking at some photo's on a website last night (I have used
this website countless times before) I was also chatting to a friend on msn
messenger, I tried to send her a file and messenger crashed, i then had to
restart my system. Since then I have not been able to access Internet
Explorer but can still connect to the internet, I can use msn and yahoo
messenger and skype. I have run a full system scan with Norton Professional
and Spysweeper which has found nothing. I then ran a scan of the hard drive
for errors which also found nothing. I have tried reinstalling drivers etc
that came on the reboot disk that I got with the laptop and nothing again....
I tried to re-install IE 6 and it said I had a newer version so could not
proceed.

Can anyone think of anything else I can try as I ma at my wits end now. I
have a HP compaq laptop running windows xp with service pack 2 and all
updates since. 512 ram, nvidia graphics, IE 6 (I assumed).

I should also mention that I have already re-stored to an earlier point, I
have 2 firewalls (have had no problem with these before) ad blocker and pop
up blocker. Windows update is on auto and it did install some on the weekend
after a restart, but I have used it fine up until this problem last night.
Thanks

Hi Chelle :)

You may have damaged the Winsock. Try the following and see if it helps.
Also, you should only have one firewall on at a time. They can cause some
conflicts that can lead to other problems.

Winsock Fix Utility
http://www.dfwonline.net/files/WinsockFix.zip
WinsockXP Fix for XP
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
Also, with instructions, at
http://www.iup.edu/house/resnet/winfix.shtm

Hope this helps.
