IE "not able to open"

Help!
When trying to download (usually PDF) files on Internet
Explorer, I get a message that states "IE was not able to
open this internet site. The requested site is either
unavailable or could not be found. Please try again
later.

I've tried later that minute, hour, day, and month to no
avail. However if I use my compuserve browser, I am able
to download the same file with no hang-up at all. Can
anyone tell me how to correct this???
