IE no longer display any page

Suddenly, my IE stopped working, whenever I start it up, it can't get
get the my homepage, which is http://localhost/ . The error message is
"loading res://c:\windows\system32\shdoclc.dll/dnserror.htm" . Seems
like it's not getting any internet connection. However, I am online
and I can access the same page using Netscape.

My system is Win2000 professional. I have Zone Alarm installed, but
have all access right set for IE (and never had problem). And I have
McAfee which do internet scan (I've now disabled it). I have also
check and confirm that there is no spyware installed (using spybot).

Anyone got an idea on what happen here? and how can I fix it?

Eliminate any scumware.
See
Dealing with Unwanted Spyware, Parasites, Toolbars and Search Engines
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each need to be updated before every use, even when just
downloaded. There's also a lot more to do than just those two programs.

If trying everything at that site does not fix the problem please post back
in the same thread.

Eliminate any scumware.

There is no scumware installed, as checked by ad-ware and spy-bot. And
I have win-patrol installed long time ago, which also do not report
any such install attempt.

I have used all possible tools, including the one mentioned on that
site, but none report any abnormal *-ware. So, I am petty sure my
machine is free of any such software.

The only software I've touch is McAfee, which do included internet
scan. Not sure if this will touch the winsock2 files. I've tried to
upgrade McAfee to 7.1 but latest downgrade it back to 4.5.1 due to
some issue. Not sure if this process will have any effect on the
winsock2, although I have am not using, and disabled, internet scan.

Will it be winsock2 is corrupted or changed? I am thinking of
reinstall winsock2, but can't find it under add/remove program. Is
there any procedure for reinstalling winsock2 without affecting any
other stuff? Will this fix the problem?

Anyone got an idea on this, how can I either get it fix (tried to fix
winsock2 but doesn't work), or reinstall (either winsock2 or IE)?.
I've tried everything mentioned in this newsgroup, but still can't
have it fix. Anyone got an idea????

Based on other's experience (and mine on another computer ...see my
other posting for the problem), seems like IE is a piece of junk!!! If
I still can't get it fix, I think instead of spending them on this, I
will install something else. Give up is my final word.

Just some update on what I've done ...I have checked and confirmed no
spyware is there using all possible tools. I've also tried to fix
winsock, and tried to reinstall tcp/ip completely, by removing it as
well as remove the associated registry key then reinstall it back.
None of the above fix the problem.

I've found that I can use Netscape and Windows Explorer to browse the
internet. ICQ, Messenger, Free Agent, and all other internet tools
works. Only IE is having problem. I've tried to install other free web
browser such as mozilla and OffbyOne, both will report connection
failed.

I am really running out of idea this. Any help?

I have tried all the options available in your linkage and nothing
seems help. The only thing I can said is winsock.* looks to be normal,
and none of the tools I use found any problem with registry and
adware. Resintall of tcp/ip doesn't help. Install Mozilla and other
free browser still cannot connect to the internet. ONLT netscape 7.1
works!

While I tried to track down problem by comparing the files in this
server with my other W2K server, I've noted the date is different on
wsock32.dll and winsock.dll. The only different is that this server
got SP4 while my working one got SP3 installed. Can someone help to
check and let me know the date of winsock.* files for SP4? Is it June
2003. I am starting to wonder if SP4 is the cause of the problem?
