Whenever I try to open IE it says it is connecting to 127.0.0 and then
'Downloading from site: res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\shdoclc.dll/dnserror.htm'
and then 'This page cannot be displayed' along with a page of web search
categories which don't go anywhere either. ???

Found the problem - something had changed the connection to a proxy setting.
All better now

Hi,
Even though you've solved the immediate problem, you should be checking this
machine for malware.

Download and run CWShredder, Ad-aware and Spybot.

Also note the security tips and other important information on that page.
