HELP - IE will not load any pages

Since the update to IE6 I cannot use internet explorer.
When I start it up or if I open a link/bookmark it goes to a white blank
page and the message:-
'Downloading from site: res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\shdoclc.dll/dnserror.htm'
appears at the bottom for a while until I move my mouse, whereupon it says
done, still with a white blank display.

I experience the exact same thing! I have an XP SP2 desktop running IE6. A
couple of days ago, I finally 'upgraded' my PC with all of the updates that
MS indicated I needed. I was running SP 2 and IE 6 so the updates were
probably security related. Anyway, since the upgrade, I cannot use IE. I
can send and receive email. I can also open up windows explorer and SEARCH
the internet and get out on the web that way. I just can't 'get out' using
IE.

If I try to go to Yahoo, for example, I briefly see an IP address on the
status bar, and then I get the same dnserror.htm message that you get. I
entered the IP address on a laptop and it did go to YAHOO, so my other PC is
getting the right addresses, it just can't access them with IE.

I uninstalled all of the updates (or, at least I think I uninstalled all of
them) but still cannot get IE to work. Sorry I cannot offer any words of
wisdom ... just misery loves company.

Obviously, I'll be very interested in possible fixes.

Actually, in rereading your post, my behavior is slightly different. I do
NOT get a blank page, I actually get the
res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\shdoclc.dll/dnserror.htm' page which basically says
Page cannot be displayed.

I get that when I fire it up and then after I click a link or bookmark it
goes blank, or if I wasnt already connected to the net.

I'm having a similar problem, not same, but simliar problem. Whenever I
attempt to open up Internet Explorer, the IE window opens and my computer
immediately freezes and there is absolutely nothing I can do, but shut my
comp down and restart.

Have you tried to change your home page - Start...Settings...Control
Panel...Internet Options...General tab.
Try "Use Blank" first, to see if you can just start IE.

OK, I have discovered and fixed my problem - although I'm not a totally happy
camper!

I use Defender Pro for my virus protection and firewall. I am VERY happy
with that product. Anyway, the firewall apparently got fubared as a result
of these upgrades.
Once I uninstalled it, IE opened fine. I had previously tried just
disabling both the virus protection and firewall but that did not work.

A co-worker of mine had a similar experience. He used Zonealarm as his
firewall. Once he uninstalled that, he was up and running.

Here's what I did to discover the problem:
Based on information in a MS kb article, I had intended to delete the
index.dat file thinking it might have been corrupt. In order to do so, I
needed to create a new account on my XP machine and log on as that user
(index.dat file is user specific and always open so, by logging on as a new
user I would have been able to delete the other user's index.dat file).
Well, when I logged on as the new user, I received 'Error loading IDS Driver
.... Defender Pro Firewall'. What I do not understand is why I never received
this error when I logged on as myself, even after many reboots (the account
used to install the MS updates). Anyway, once I uninstalled the firewall, I
was up and running again.

I do plan to try and reinstall this firewall again. The jury is out at this
point if it is totally fubared by the latest MS updates.

Hope this helps with your problem!

Good luck
