I'm a novice on XP Pro. My disc was getting full so
cleanup came up, and though I don't think I modified IE,
whenever I click on a link, it won't forward me to that
web page, and at some point I got a message that I'd lost
that sub-program that lets me link. There's probably a
page somewhere that shows me how to restore it, but I
don't know what to ask for. Anyone know how I restore this
function?

Use System Restore (Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System
Restore) to go back to before you started cleaning stuff up. Then learn
what you can remove, etc. Post back if you need more help.

1. Click [Start] [Run] type:
(Press Enter after each command)
Regsvr32 /i URLMON.DLL
Regsvr32 /i shdocvw.dll
Regsvr32 oleaut32.dll
Regsvr32 actxprxy.dll

2. Restart Windows
3. Open IE [Tools] [Internet Options] [Programs] [Reset Web Settings]

If this does not help, run this fix:
