IE full screen ads that wont close

During browsing of some sites, the site itself (or the redirection thereof) appears in full screen mode with "NO" way out. (i.e. I cant close it without Ctrl Alt Del and the ending the IExplore.exe session) Is this supposed to happen (other than the desired website's intent) or did I not do something to prevent it.

I don't recall the site but it was accessed through an email link from a friend.

Full screen, 1 browser open, couldn't close without ending the process.

Have LavaSofts Ad-aware pro 6 (but could not duplicate effect) or Is this just the site's way of saying... "Stay awhile, end your experience with me?"

In future try F11 key and see if that can put the controls back in view.

AdAware is not perfect (although this doesn't sound a lot like spyware)
