IE Favorites logo icons disappear

This is something I've observed in both NT/IE5 and XP/IE6. Hardly a matter
of great consequence, but I'm curious.

When adding a Web site to my IE Favorites list, the site's bookmark in the
Favorites pane will often have a spiffy custom logo icon beside it
(presumably supplied by the site). Examples are CNN, Fox News, Washington
Post, New York Times. But days or weeks later, I'll notice that the custom
icon has spontaneously reverted to the standard blue "e". Does anyone know
what's going on here, why the original custom icon doesn't "stick"?

Hi Alan

thanks for your answer, but pcmag apparantly does not provide for deep-linking. I get the main page of pcmag when using your link. Could you give some more info on how to keep the icons for IE

Thank

Hi Frank.

All you had to do was search at PCMag as they occasionally change
urls.
Here is one of the hits:

If you want to keep them, then you have to either use a program like
Favorg or save them from the Temporary Internet Files and use Change
Icon in the Properties of the shortcut. (Favorg is a lot easier)

The utility FavOrg is no longer a freeware, but I've seen users downloading it from other sources. Here is a method (which I've not tried yet) which might help you preserve the fav icons manually.

<quote>
To make them permanent:
* Manually clear TIF
* Save page as favorite (Favicon is only downloaded during this step)
* Open 2 windows side by side -- the TIF view from within IE, and
a Windows Explorer (NOT Internet Explorer) window, set to the
folder/directory you wish to store the Favicons in.
* Drag-n-drop favicon.ico from TIF to the Explorer folder
* Rt-click on the Favorite, click Properties, then Web Document
* Invoke "Change Icon..." dialog and set to the .ico file you just dragged
* Repeat for each site
