IE error when closing

A random error occurred recently after closing INternet Explorer. It is:

iexplorer. exe - application error

The instructions at 0x017d494e referenced memory at 0x000000008. The memory
could not be read.

Click on OK to terminate the program.

The first time I got this, several days ago, the error was the same but the
numbers were different. Second set was 0x00000000 all 0's can't remember the
first

Have also been noticing TCIP warning in my event viewer. 3 over the last 3
days. Do not know if these are related.

Called microsoft tech support, they want me to reinstall IE and Windows XP.
I am not sure this is the problem at all. Error in IE happened only a couple
of times and 3 warnings in Event Viewer with TCIP. Would never know about
the second if I did not check the Event Viewer.

With the IE error, I can go right back online and surf as normal. Never
held me up from going on line. The TCIP Warning has also not casued a
surfing problem as yet. Would really like to knowabout these issues.

Should mention that I run Adaware SE religiously with current updates,
delete all cookies and Temp files religously, have router w/firewall and
Mcafee full security center with firewall, viruscan, and privacy service
w/add,popup, & web bug blockers. Have also ran Webroots free scanner for
spyware. I have never found any spyware or virus to date. What gives. Any
information would be appreciated.

KM1,

Been having the same problem here. Not too often before I installed
Webroot's trialware, but moreso afterwards. Webroot has given me the worst
support and I basically told them they lost a sale after my trial runs out. I
was going to purchase it )

Anyway, when I run a System Info and look at the details for my IE 6, there
are a couple files missing and one or two that can't be identified. Probably
from adware, malware, etc. I run McAffe AV and FW as well.

Here are the two I mostly get from Event Viewer when they happen:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Application Hang
Event Category: (101)
Event ID: 1002
Description:
Hanging application iexplore.exe, version 6.0.2900.2180, hang module
hungapp, version 0.0.0.0, hang address 0x00000000.

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Application Error
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1000
Description:
Faulting application iexplore.exe, version 6.0.2900.2180, faulting module
ntdll.dll, version 5.1.2600.2180, fault address 0x000118d0.

One of them, MS specifies that it "was" caused by Webroot's Spyware. But MS
can't explain the exact cause. Think I may de-activate the IE shields and see
if I get anymore crashes.

Hi,
In the same vein as TimBud's answer, I would start disabling any
(legitimate) third-party programs that might be causing this. Look at any
program that interacts with IE.

This (lengthy) troubleshooting process might help:

Hi KM1 :)

Try the following if you are sure there's no scumware on the system:

How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows
XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318378/EN-US/
Be sure to visit Windows Update site and let it scan for all needed updates
and service packs afterward.

Hope this helps :)

Guys thanks for the response, however, there are just to many posts here
regarding the IE error on close to be a reinstall issue. If you search using
google you will find people who have looked for spyware and done a complete
reinstall and stilll find this error coming up every once in a while. I
found more then one post who never had the issue until they got SP2. Now my
machine came with SP2 installed so it is not a problem of being installed
incorrectly. Any other possibilities????

Also, how about the Tcpip warning in my event viewer. Would like to no
more. Understand that this also never came up before SP2. Thanks

Hi,
I didn't recommend a reinstall of IE or the OS. I think that it would be
worthwhile to see if another program isn't getting along with IE.

Don, thanks for the response. Are you talking about addins or things like
Adobe and Java which both work with IE on certain sites. I do know that I
had used both Adobe and Java during my surfing before this error. Would not
know were to start because the error is not reproducible in any one
situation. It just happens, and only twice in the last month. Only other
thing was an IE hang that I had only once. With that in mind, could you
advise on how to focus in on what might be causing this issue? Thanks.

Hi,
Actually if it's happened twice in the last month, I probably wouldn't try
to track it down. ;-)

I strongly suspect that it's another program having a conflict with IE, but
it's too infrequent to troubleshoot.

Does your firewall log show any suspicious activity?

I only have two inbound events in April and both are from Mcafee. Neither
are on the date that the error occurred. The activity you speak of are the
inbound events, right??? Should mention I have Mcafee Firewall Plus and Hard
Firewall in Linksys Router. Also run Mcafee Viruscan & Mcafee Privacy
Service which contains an add blocker, a popup blocker, and a web bug
blocker. All are running in the background. Have updated and run Adaware SE
religously (daily). Hope any of this new info helps

I should point out that I have been trying to research this for a week and
there are some posts on google referring to a similar error after accessing a
site using Java, going to other sites, then closing IE. Not much on this
error though. Microsoft Tech could not find anything using the numbers in
the error.

Yes, it has only happened twice (and one IE hang w/two erors in event viewer
1-fault bucked 126637809 and 2-Hanging app Iexplore.exe hugapp v.0.0.0.0 hand
address 0x00000000). Do not know if this is just a normal occurrence that
happens every once in a while with the complexity of programs and 3rd party
software OR a spyware / adaware / virus / or other malicious software causing
a problem. If the former, who cares.

If I had listened to MS techs, they would have had me do an uninstall and
reinstall of OS and IE already. Just don' think that will help. Have read
of a couple others, I think in this site, who have done this and it did not
solve problem. Seems to happen more often w/sp2 users. What do you
think?????

Thanks for any other info Don.

Hi,
You might run HijackThis and research suspicious/unknown entries (processes,
startups, BHOs, etc) via google. Get HJT from
http://www.aumha.org/a/parasite.php#hjt

This online HJT log analyzer should not be taken to be the final word on any
HJT entries- doublecheck anything that it flags as bad, but you may find it
useful http://www.hijackthis.de/index.php?langselect=english

But, I suspect that a legitimate process just occasionally causes this when
you close IE, because of a timing issue or some other glitch.

Suspicious activity in a firewall log (either direction) could point to an
adware, spyware, parasite program. It sounds like you're not seeing that.

Regarding the TCPIP warning in event log, do the Details provide any useful
information?
