IE, Downloads, and Firewalls

I use Windows 98 SE and IE 6.0.2800.11061C on a desktop
computer. Since installing an SBC-Yahoo DSL connection a
few weeks ago, I have encountered the following problems:
(1) FTP files cannot be downloaded from the Microsoft
Windows update page (interruption after about 60% of
fownload); (2) home network icon (2Wire) in system tray
shows DSL network inactive (icon "grayed out") while both
desktop and wiresless laptop are actively connected to
Internet (laptop working normally, desktop repeatedly
encountering problems accessing websites such as not
displaying graphics or showing messages that there is no
connection when Internet is actually up). According to SBC
staff, problem (2) is due to firewalls on my desktop
computer. Questions: How do I detect all incompatible
firewalls there may be? And what can I do about problem
(1)? Thank you so much.

don't know what firewall you use, i find outpost works
good. ie6 does not work well with 98se. i would look for
malware/scumware.
