ie cannot download a file

The download window "getting information" shows and then
the message "internet explorer cannot download
myprogram.exe from www.myserver.com line apart come the
following explanation: Internet explorer was not able to
open this internet site. the requested site is either
unavailable or cannot be found"
The message is the same as the Ms Knowledge base article
#317208,
the only problem is that the same file could be accesible
from any other computer in the same network.
Current configuration
ie V6.0.2800.1106.xpsp2.030422-1633
Updated versions: SP1, Q324929; Q810847; Q813951;
Q813489; Q330994; Q818529; Q822925
I applied Q816868 that have a similar message but because
did not fix the problem I uninstalled the patch.

According to the cases in the page,
the closes match seems to be the one that specify that it
is an IE index damaged
which points to
Microsoft Knowledge Base article 306837

However the solution is for IE 5.5 in w2k

I am using ie 6.0 in XP profesional

Please, can you indicate where is the index file that
needs to be deleted and the procedure if it is different
