ie cache stays after i clear temp internet files

I found 400000 files in cache while running my av
software. I had cleared cache in ie 6 but hidden versions
of the files still remained, using 7GB of my hard drive
space. These files do not show in windows explorer, even
if i tell it to view hidden files or try to change the
attributes of my local settings folder to not hidden for
all files and subfolders. It seems every internet page I
ever visited gets saved to this secret location. I was
able to eliminate these files iusing a windows washer
program (it took 13 hours) but I wondered if there was a
way to prevent internet explorer from saving duplicate
copies?

Remove your TIF cache index it may be corrupt, a new one will be created.

Delete/Empty Temporary Internet Cache completely
