Sorry for the cross posting...but I'm not sure if this is an IE6 problem or
a Windows update problem.

I'm running Windows 98 SE
Have ie 6 SP1

When I click on Start/Windows Update
1. An internet Explorer Window is started
2. IE tries to go to Http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp
3. The box in the bottom lefthand corner of IE says "DONE"
4. IE hangs. The windows updater doesn't say anything about scanning
5. The only way I can get out of it is to Ctrl-Alt-Del once which does
nothing
6. Pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del a second time brings me to the BSOD
7. When I do click on Ctrl-Alt-Del the second time
8. The Close Progam window appears
9. Clicking on Internet Explorer and then "End Task"
10. The ie window disappears and a dialogue box appears that says
11. "UNKNOWN" This program has performed an illegal operation and will be
shut down
12. Clicking on details gives me the following information IEXPLORE caused
an invalid page fault in module KERNEL32.DLL at 017f:bff9db61. Registers:
etc.
13. "UNKNOWN" This program has performed an illegal operation and will be
shut down
14. Looking at the update logs heres an example of what I see. 2003-06-29
17:02:08 00:02:08 Sucess IUCTL Starting

These are the things I've tried
1. Disable all anti-virus programs
2. Clear the cache, history and cookies
3. Rename the HOSTS file to OLDHOSTS
4. Clean Install of ie6 SP1
5. Start/Settings/Control Panel/Add Remove Programs/Microsoft Internet
Explorer SP1/Repair
6. All of the recommendations at
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/ for a 0% scan.
7. Install latest scripting Engine
8. Repair IE 6 (again)
9. Run Regsvr32
10. Register Urlmon.dll, Shdocvw.dll, Msjava.dll, Actxprxy.dl, Oleaut32.dll,
Mshtml.dll, Browseui.dll
11. Perform a check for parasites @ http://aumha.org/a/noads.htm none found
12. Tested for Java @ http://www.fitwise.com/testjava.asp test was sucessful
13. Tested for MS VM here http://www.visualware.com/support/javasupport.html
also successful.
14. Checked the clock and calendar as some have suggested in this forum
15. No Discussion Bar
16. Checked the Http settings
17. Checked the SSL settings
18. All script settings are "enabled"
19. Internet LAN connection settings are "unchecked"
20. Add following sites to the list of "Trusted Sites"
http://*.microsoft.com http://www.download.windowsupdate.com
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com http://download.windowsupdate.com
21. Reboot
22. Same crash and hang

Also tried logging into Https://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com same crash
and hang episode occurred.
Other secure web sites can be readily accessed by this computer.
I've also noticed that anytime I enter a Macromedia flash site I get the
same crash and hang reaction.

Any help would be appreciated.....I've been beating my brain on this one for
the last 3 days.

No Kazaa or any file sharing software was ever installed on thic computer.
It's primarily an engineering work station

I do beleive that the error comes from something that is preventing script
blocking
