IE 6 Hangs During Download In Windows Update

I have not been able to complete a download activity for a
fix from Windows Update. I can request the download,
accept the EULA and get the download panel. But neither my
download panel nor my modem connecton panel shows any
bytes being transfered. Microsoft article Q222125
addresses the problem, but the "solution" has not worked
for me. Does anyone have any insight about the problem?
This is rather serious since I can't download any fixes
(including future ones that might fix such a problem!). IE
is becoming a single point of failure for my system.
