IE 6 Download Problems

I installed some "recommended" updates from microsoft
update for WinXP and IE 6, since then I've played the
dickens to get anything to download. I've run Spybot,
Ad-Aware, Cleaner 4.1, RegClean, I've re-installed IE 6,
I've update-installed WinXP, and I've checked the registry
for the plugin "exe" value. Nothing has worked so far.
I'm getting close to playing football with this machine,
the only way I've been able to accomplish anything was by
downloading FireFox on another machine and installing it on
this machine. That's a cop-out, not a fix. Does anyone
have any fresh ideas?

I've also done the turn of 3rd party helpers thing.
Nothing works. It keeps giving the message that the site
can't be reached, for any IE 6 requested download.

While looking through the other responses and visiting many
websites, I happened on the old fix for IE 5.5 I think,
which was to delete the "index.dat" file in the internet
explorer content temporary files folder. I started a new
account in XP and IE 6 works fine. I cannot find the
index.dat file in XP. HELP!!!!!!! Please, where is it
located and/or what is different about a new account from
an old account that I can fix?
