help installing IE 6 updates

I'm having a problem installing IE updates to my computer. I get an error
message that tells me IE 6 SP 1 must be installed on my machine. As far as I
can tell, IE 6 SP 1 is installed on my machine. If I try to download and
install IE 6 SP 1 anyway, I get an error mesage that tells me a newer version
of IE has been detected and setup cannot continue. I've had this problem
before and after Windows XP SP 2 was installed in my machine. I've tried
removing IE from the registry as directed by Microsoft support, but to no
avail. Please Help! Thanks in advance.

Usually that is a signal that the update is unnecessary,
e.g. superseded by something else you have.
