ie 6.0 install trouble

PLEASE HELP!!

I have Windows 98 and am trying to download and install IE
6.0 (I currently have 5.0). When I run the install, a
message pops up that the install process is incomplete and
that ie has not been updated. It cannot proceed further.
Also, when this happens, my current ie 5.0 becomes
corrupted - the toolbar is all messed up, and other
windows like explorer and control panel now also have
messed up toolbars. I have downloaded from Microsoft site,
so what's the deal? Does 6.0 have compatibility issues
with 98?

I really need to update. Can someone help?

Disable your anti-virus application and leave it that way as you go to
Windows Update to download/install IE6-SP1. Reboot and revisit Windows
Update afterwards, please.
