IE 6.0 and Windows Explorer crashe every time

1. Internet Explorer 6.0 crashes on startup with
exception code 0xc0000005 in module vx2.dll (ver. 0.3.1.6).

2. Windows Explorer and My Computer no longer come up at
all; I just get an hour glass for 2 - 3 seconds.

Problem 1 began about the time I installed Microsoft
Plus!, which issued popups saying it was updating some
components.
Problem 2 began about the time I installed the latest
Windows Update security patch for Windows XP Home Edition
(I think it was for Windows Media Player.)
(In the few days between these events I installed Intuit
TurboTax 2004 and a Symantec virus definition file update.)

I reinstalled Windows XP Home Edition, to no avail.
