Ide controller help

Hi

my setup:

gigabyte GA-BX2000+ Motherboard
pentium 3 600mhz
512RAM
15 gig quantum hard drive
voodoo 3000 agp graphics
plextor cd writer

I have just installed windows xp professional after using win 98. It was a
clean install stall on a formated hard drive. The problem is everything is
really slow, it takes ages to boot and accessing files on cd roms takes ages
for folders etc.. to appear.

If i disable the ide ata / adapti controller in device manager, everything
speeds up but i loose the primary and secondary ide channels so i cannot see
the cd drive.

i installed the promise technology ultra 66 controller which appeared in the
scsi / raid controller section of device manager, though this is not a scsi
device.

and the bios has been updated via the gigabyte website.

excuse my ignorance, but i thought it would be easier than this.

It sounds like a BIOS or driver setting isn't allowing direct memory
access (DMA) but rather just programmed I/O (PIO). See:
http://www.ati.com/support/faq/winxp/winxpconfigenabledma.html
and check the settings in your BIOS. Another good newsgroup
for IDE help is comp.sys.ibm.pc.storage

An add-on ide controller will show up as scsi, so that's correct. It
certainly sounds like there's a problem with the ide controller on the
motherboard, maybe a driver issue. Did you install all the correct
motherboard drivers after installing windows, but before installing
everything else? It's doubtful they would have been on the motherboard CD,
and that motherboard probably pre-dates XP, so you probably would have had
to gotten them from the Gigabyte website.
