IDE DVD listed as SCSI device

I've just build my parents a budget system- the basic components are:
Biostar M7NCD Ultra (NForce 2 Ultra) w/Athlon Sempron 3000+
Maxtor 200 GB Sata DiamondMax 10 HD
2X256MB Crucial PC2700 Memory
Internal USB card reader
Floppy
Temporarily installed Plextor 708A DVD RW (they have a new NEC I'll install
when I give the computer to them).

Problem: The IDE DVD RW is not listed under Device Manager> ATA IDE/ATAPI.
It is, instead, listed as a SCSI device. The motherboard BIOS list it
properly (IDE Channel 10, Primary), and the boot screen list is as IDE also.
This is with the installation of only the NVidia SATA Controller or the full
SATA/RAID driver on the Biostar website.

Seems this is a WindowsXP issue since the BIOS recognizes the drive as IDE.
Has anyone had this problem or have any ideas to remedy?

Thanks,
Fitz

What problem does this cause?
Once upon a time, I put an Adaptec IDE card in a PCI slot. Sure enough, the
drive was listed as SCSI, but it worked fine.

Cut & pasted from the mobo's online PDF manual...
http://www.biostar-usa.com/mbdetails.asp?model=m7ncd+ultra
"Hard Disk Connectors: IDE1/ IDE2
The motherboard has a 32-bit Enhanced PCI IDE Controller that provides PIO
Mode 0~4, Bus Master, and Ultra DMA 33/ 66/ 100/ 133 functionality. It has
two
HDD connectors IDE1 (primary) and IDE2 (secondary).
The IDE connectors can connect a master and a slave drive, so you can connect
up to four hard disk drives. The first hard drive should always be connected
to
IDE1."
I assume you installed the SATA Raid controller drivers during XP
installation initial setup..? See links on clean install...
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sg_clean.asp
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html
Set your jumpers correctly, master, slave..?
Perhaps you need to install the OS on the first IDE HD...? What does it
recomend in the manual that came packaged with the mobo?

The HD is a SATA drive, thus the installation of the SATA controller. There
is no IDE HD to install the OS on . The only IDE drive installed is the DVD
RW, and it is set at Cable Select, IDE 1, Primary. The SATA driver was
installed via the F6 floppy method during the initial install of the OS. The
disk was partitioned with the MaxBlast utility prior to installing the OS.
OS is XP SP2 w/all available updates.

Yes, I understand.. Most people might have used an IDE drive first because
there cheaper than SATA, at least I would have.. I still would have loaded
the SATA drivers during the installation of XP, so I would have been able to
add an SATA drive later on.. Perhaps not starting with an IDE drive has
caused some confusion between the board and XP..? You might try updating or
reinstalling the IDE drivers in device manager for the primary & secondary
IDE channels, your call..

I personally never use the HD utility software to partition or format a
drive.. I have either used fdisk or format from a DOS boot disk, in the old
days.. Now, of course I just use XP's option during installation or in Disk
management, have never had any problems.. However, I would without hesitation
use the HD manufactures diagnostic utility, though..
Hope you solve your dilemma..

Thanks for the reply- reinstalling the IDE drivers from Device Manager did
the trick. Primary and Secondary IDE are now visible, with a device located
on IDE 0, Master, UDMA 2. Perfect. Additionally, under DVD\CD Drives, the
Plextor is listed without the "SCSI" identifier.

Thanks again-
Fitz
