"SATA RAID" in Device Manager

I just installed Windows XP Pro on a new (budget) system. The motherboard is
a Biostar M7NCD Ultra. The hard drive is a Maxtor Sata 200 GB DiamondMax 10
and the optical drive is a Plextor 716A DVD RW.

I installed the Sata controller via floppy (F6) during the initial install
of Windows after formatting and partitioning the drive. I installed the
chipset drivers after installing SP2.

Device Manager shows "SATA RAID" as an unknown device ( ! surrounded by
yellow circle). IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers shows a device installed on IDE 0
Primary Channel, but does not identify it. The transfer mode is correct
(UDMA 2).

The Biostar website has two downloads for the motherboard for SATA/RAID. One
is a download specifically for SATA RAID controller for installing Windows
onto a SATA drive (the one I used). The other says SATA RAID Driver and is
considerably larger (6.7 MB vs 294KB). Its a VIA VT6420 / 8237 chip. Note
one says "controller" while the other says "driver".

If I install the larger driver file, the "unknown device" in Device Manager
goes away, but the Plextor DVD is identified as a "Plextor SCSI 716A DVD RW"
instead of being listed under IDE ATA/ATAPI.

Seems that installing the SATA RAID controller should alleviate the unknown
device problem, but leave the optical drive identified as an IDE device. It
should also list the drive by name as it does on my other XP machines. When
identified as a SCSI device, there is not transfer mode listed.

This is the only VIA Sata Raid controller I've had- is this normal, or am I
missing something?

Thanks

Fitz
