Quick SATA Question

I've done a lot with SCSI RAID, SAS and SATA on the server side (with
2.5" hot-swap disks) in Compaq & HP ProLiant systems, but never on the
desktop/workstation side. If I buy a new computer for my home system,
with an onboard SATA controller, can I hook up my current IDE drive to
it? Or do I need to buy a SATA hard drive? In other words, can a run-
of-the-mill IDE/ATA hard drive work on a SATA controller or does a
SATA/SATA2 controller require a 'SATA' drive?

Thanks.

Hi :Bazooka-Joe. You can buy SATA to IDE converters.
You can also buy IDE to SATA converter.
Just do a google for the type you need.

The new computers and motherboard with SATA still have an IDE port because
DVD/CD-ROM drives are still mostly IDE.

1. Check and see if the motherboard you're buying has at least one IDE
connector.

2. To use and IDE drive on a SATA controller you'll need a SATA
converter card for each drive.

3. Buy a PCI IDE controller for your IDE drive(s).

Cheers,

Ari

Fundamentally an SATA controller will run much faster with an SATA
harddrive. IDE is on its way out...
