new dvd-rw drive - bios detects drive correctly, windows does not...

Matt

i've got an ide dvd-rw drive connected to a SATA controller, using an
IDE to SATA adapter. the bios correctly identifies the drive, but
windows does not see it. the controller is not bad, as it works just
fine if i connect the other dvd drive that is in the computer to that
channel. here's what i've got:

dell dimension e520
pioneer dvr710 dvd-rw drive

any ideas? this is confusing the hell outta me...

Did you set the jumper on the drive properly ie..slave (S) ,master (M),
computer select (CS), single master (SM), etc.. What is the jumper setting on
the drive that works..?

the drive that works is a SATA drive, i do not see any jumpers on
it...when i try to just connect the dvd-rw, i have it set as master
(it's the only drive in the computer at this point)...

btw, the drive is a pioneer dvr-710, if that helps...

1. Pressing <Ctrl>+<C> before prompted enters the QLogic FASTUtil menu
instead of the CERC/SATA BIOS.

The key sequence used to enter the QLogic FASTUtil menu is <Ctrl>+<Q> and
the sequence to enter the CERC/SATA BIOS is <Ctrl>+<C>. However, <Ctrl>+<C>
is required to enter QLogic FASTUtil when console redirection is enabled on
some systems. This is because the <Ctrl>+<Q> key sequence is not passed to
the QLogic BIOS when console redirection is enabled.

2. Wait for the CERC/SATA BIOS prompt before pressing the <Ctrl>+<C> keys.

Wait for the CERC/SATA BIOS prompt before pressing the <Ctrl>+<C> keys.

Found this of the Dell site does it apply, seems like a separate SATA bios..?

I cannot seem to get into any of the other BIOS screens - ctrl-Q and
ctrl-C both did nothing (unless I'm pressing them at the wrong point),
and Dell tech support also told me ctrl-I (which also did nothing).

This is really frustrating...I've never had this issue before where the
BIOS can see a drive but Windows can't.

ok, it seems like the adapter is not getting power throughout (the
power light comes on initially when the computer boots, but then turns
off and doesn't return)...what i can't figure out is why the bios can
see the drive without the adapter having power...

Matt,

Try removing the jumper pin completely, as a test.. Also dongle seems to
have come with a utility disk, see if the utility can verify dongles
operation or if there are settings options.. I also noticed that for 16x
operation the optical drive requires an 80 pin data cable, the dongle link
indicates 40 pin, so what are you using..?
You really need to figure out how to access both BIOS areas, if there are
indeed two, ie.. one exclusively for your SATA controller.. Does the dongle
or drive show up in device manager or disk management areas..?
Cheers..

What about device manager or disk management..? Your not seeing it in the my
compiter window, right..?

If you say you see it in the BIOS, yet you say you can't get in, I'm
confused, what and how do you get into the BIOS that you can see the optical
drive in..? Also is the drive in the BIOS you can access set to auto, can you
set the boot priority for the drive in the BIOS too..? Does the dongle show
up anywhere in the BIOS or anywhere else, like device manager, perhaps in a
different group/heading..? Remember, you may need to turn the computer off
and access the BIOS from a cold boot, restarting the computer usually doesn't
allow BIOS access..

My optical drives LED blinks at startup initially then goes out, this is
normal.. Are you saying there are LED's on the dongle that do the same, ie..
matching the drives LED behaveur..? Try putting in a DVD movie and see if
there is a corresponding LED flashing, to indicate power or any drive
activity..

Thanks for all the help, but I ended up just returning the adapter and
picking up a PCI IDE controller card - the drive works perfectly that
way (as I knew it would). I should've just gone that route in the
first place...

Thanks again though for the help!
