ICS IP Address

Derek

Does any one know how to change the Internet Connection
Sharing IP Address? My DSL Modem is set to 192.168.0.1
and is not changable. Windows XP also wants to use this
ip address for ICS. Now when ever i try to do the ICS it
either gives an error message about the ip is being
used. Or the internet does not work at all. If any one
has any suggestions please e-mail me at
(e-mail address removed).

Thanks,
Derek P

Derek,

Asked here, answered here. For everybody's benefit.

The ICS address is not changeable. But most modems are. What make and model is
the modem?

If you have DSL, why not use a broadband router? Forget about ICS.

You have broadband, and multiple computers. Connecting the computers with a
router is the responsible solution.

All computers will be safer. The router will block any malevolent internet
traffic. This further protects the internet, from your becoming infected and
spreading the infection.

All computers will run better, with the router blocking the trash infection
traffic.

All computers will run independent of each other. Right now, if you get ICS
working, you will have to have one computer on whenever you wish to access the
internet from any other. With a router, that's not true.

If you can afford to have more then one computer, and broadband, you can afford
a router. For many reasons.

And Derek, please don't contribute to the spread and success of email address
mining viruses. Learn to munge your email address properly, to keep yourself a
bit safer when posting to open forums. Protect yourself and the rest of the
internet - never post your address unmunged.

I've replied by E-mail, as you requested, and in the news group. If
you reply to me, please do so only in the news group.

You can get ICS to use a different address. However, this is an
unsupported configuration, not tested or suggested by Microsoft. It
might cause networking problems on the host computer, so make a system
restore point before doing it:

1. Temporarily assign a static IP address to the DSL connection
that you want to share, using an address that isn't in 192.168.0.x.

2. Enable ICS on that network connection.

3. Manually change the IP address of the LAN (home network) connection
to a different subnet, such as 192.168.1.x.

4. Restore the proper IP address for the shared network connection.

This unsupported configuration will automatically disable the DHCP
server that normally runs on the ICS host. You'll have to assign
static IP addresses to all of the ICS clients.

If you have any alternative to this configuration, I recommend using
the alternative. Examples would be a broadband router or a different
Internet sharing program.
