ICS Clients can not "dial" the shared connection

I have host properly configured to share a PPPoE internet connection using
ICS.

The host itself is an XP SP2 machine that has two network adapters - one
leading to the ISP and another to my home LAN that has 2 computers. I've set
all three of them according to the official MS instructions, the server gets
the IP 192.168.0.1 and the clients 192.168.0.x, file sharing works among them
and the shared internet connection is listed under the clients "Network
Connections".

HOWEVER the shared connection is ALWAYS listed as Disconnected, no matter
what its actual status on the host is. When I double click it I get the small
window saying first "Connecting..." and then "Connected" but the status in
"Network Connections" remains Disconnected and I can't browse, ping or use
any chat software. This happens on both clients and there seems to be no way
out of it.

Please help out if you happen to have come accross the same problem. The
official MS database has no refferences to that specific problem at all.

Thanks!

Couple of possibilities:

1. Turn off ICS and use a proxy server. Jana Server is one of the best.
Analogx.com offers a very simple proxy.

Proxies are a little more complex than routers or ICS to setup, but work in
a wider range of situations. You change the browser settings to suit the
proxy, the LAN gateway and DNS settings are unimportant.

2. Again turn off iCS, and buy a router box. Since there are two LAN cards,
sounds like it's a cable-style feed rather than ADSL. Therefore, check you
get a suitable type. This is the best route if available, as it provides
better security, and doesn't rely on one computer being on 24/7.
