ICS and Router not compatable

I have two computers connected via a Netgear RP614
Cable/DSL Router. I do not have access to either Cable
nor DSL at this time. It's just one comuter talking thru
the router to a Host computer that has a dial up access
to the internet.
The Router defaults to IP 192.168.0.1, but when I
enable Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) I get a message
from SP saying that there is an IP address conflict. SP
wants to use 192.168.0.1 all by itself.
I can change the default IP address of the Router to
something different, e.g. 192.168.1.1 so that when
everything comes on line, DNS will make my two computers
come in as 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.1 so that everyone
still talks to each other. The problem is that then when
I enable ICS, XP will change the host address to
192.168.0.1 and it will then NOT talk to the others.
My question is, therefore, what must I do to allow the
Router to do its thing, but still have the ability to
share the Internet via ICS?

Isn't it possible to share the connection through the router without the
ICS?

Since you're using ICS to share the dial-up Internet connection,
bypass the router's Internet sharing and routing functions and use it
as a network switch only:

1. Connect both computers to the router's LAN ports. Don't connect
anything to the router's WAN (Internet) port.

2. Change the router's LAN IP address to 192.168.0.254 to avoid the IP
address conflict and put it in the same subnet that ICS uses.

3. Disable the router's built-in DHCP server so that the ICS host
computer will be the only DHCP server on the network. The host will
assign a 192.168.0.x address to the client.

My understanding is that the Router will share an
Internet Connection with other LAN members, but that it
shares only the Cable/DSL connection, not a Dial Up
connection from a host outside the Router.
See the first response. It looks exactly like what I
need.

THAT SOLUTION WORKED GREAT. I NOW HAVE EVERYTHING
WORKING, BOTH COMPUTERS CAN SEE ONE ANOTHER, I CAN SHARE
A PRINTER AND WITH THIS LAS FIX, I CAN SHARE MY DIAL UP
CONNECTION WITH SEPARATE LOGINS ON EACH OF THE TWO
COMPUTERS.
THANKS,
JIM

You're welcome, Jim. I can see that you're HAPPY. :)

I'm glad that my suggestion helped you get everything working. Thanks
for reporting the results.
