ICQ Alternative - Miranda

T

Terry

I'm not reading this group atm, so i don't know if this has been
discussed much before.
But, looking for a reliable ICQ alternative that is not bloated and
that works, I came across Miranda.

You keep your ICQ contact list and those of other IM lists the prog
supports

A 600kb D/L and an easy install, loads very fast and allows
replication of the basic ICQ options like sound wavs for basic events.

No banner ads is an obvious bonus, since getting rid of the ads in
later versions of ICQ is a bit of a pain, and downgrading to a pre
2000 build is not an option for some weird and wonderful reason.

Ah well

This is a pricelessware prog; it is prolly on the web site but I am
too idle to look tonight.

It is good, and I like it better than Trillian. But apparently
several IM server-providers are attempting to block it, just
like they did with Trillian time after time. It will be
interesting to see if the battle continues.

I like it too, but I still prefer Trillian, largely because the Miranda IM
Yahoo! protocol is very weak. M still has maturing to do overall (which
isn't surprising considering that it's only at v0.3!).

Are you getting blocked anywhere ... AOL, Yahoo?

The Yahoo plugin was taken offline due to changes in the protocol
itself. If you want a functioning plugin (albeit in experimental
stages at this time) you can go to Miranda's support forums and look
for it there. Not that hard to find if you do a little digging. As of
this writing i'm having no problems with Yahoo, MSN, AIM, or ICQ. All
are functioning normally.

It's much more stable for Me than ICQ and much faster.

Haven't got so much problems lately maybe they got the worst bugs out now.

Compared to ICQ it have much fewer features but I never use them anyway almost only sends
standard messages.
