Many companies now have their own Icon, so that when you put a Shortcut to a
Website on your Desktop, that company's Icon shows. But after I shut down my
computer and turn it back on, that "company" Icon has been replaced by the
blue 'e' icon of Microsoft Internet Explorer. Is there a way that I can keep
the Icon that a company provides?

Those special icons are called "favicons" and are kept in your Temporary
Internet Files directory. As the TIF directly gets emptied (as it
should), the favicon disappears. Here are ways to keep it:

http://rickrogers.org/fixes.htm#Favicons
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm - FavOrg-restore and save
favourite icons (line 108, right column)
