Change Icons back to proper 3rd party app

I work for a small software company, and frequently need to show people my
computer. We have our own proprietary formats, but everytime I update one of
my software pieces from a larger company, I get their icons instead of my
own. (They are bigger, but we are older). You used to be able to change
icons, but I can't find anyway to get my own icons back in the Right
Click>Properties menu.

I can't use shortcuts where I can change icons, because we need to be able
to open these files from within our program. I've tried the Open with and
check the box to always open. It always opens, but it doesn't change the
icons back to those specified in the registry entries for it.

Are your icons associated with an executable file (EXE etc.) or data file?
Have tried searching for icon repair resources on the 'net?

We've actually managed to stay independent since 1992, so we are pretty
old for a software company. They are proprietary data files, not the .exe's.
Those pretty much stay good with the MS icons.

I've checked all my shell.dll icons and they are fine. So that isn't
damaged. It is just that the big company updates its software weekly it
seems, and that software update includes a write to registry that registers
all the files they want to associate, and I can't find ANYPLACE in their
program how to unassociate.

So what about when you use Explorer / Tools / Folder Options / File Types to
associate your icon with the file?
