ICONS OK, but text underneath all SYMBOLS

My daughter has Windows XP and deleted a number of programs via the
Add/Delete Programs.
At one point and for only 1 program it gave her the message that some files
"may" not be needed anymore, but could impact other programs if she would
delete . She decided then to keep them but continue with the rest of the
un-install.

She then did a Restart and she just calls me and says she can see in Normal
mode all the Icons, but the text is always a group of symbols, squares and
triangles etc. No letters.

I asked her to go to Safe Mode and there are the Icons and description all
there in the English language.

How can she recover that for the "normal" mode?

I asked her to use the original Windows XP CD and see whether she could get
to the Repair function, but the computer tells her that she cannot continue
because what she has on the computer now is more up to date than what the CD
contains. It is "grayed out" for Install and therefore also for Repair.

Thanks for advice I can pass on to her before she does a complete clean
install and lose all user files.

Tell her to try a System Restore. Go to Start>All
Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore. Just follow the
instructions and go back before this problem
happened.

That error has nothing to do with the removal of programs... since the error
you are seeing is something from the core of windows that a program would
not remove... You could remove every single program and that should not
happen.

so dont blame her for that.. its something else.

You can do a repair installation if you have the disk.. but its a bit
fussy.. google for "repair installation windows XP"

I NEVER blamed her for the un-install option that she chose.
I just gave you the facts surrounding the final result.

Icon | where it says Font, click the down arrow | click Tahoma | click OK |
