Icons disappeared!

Suddenly every icon on my desktop disappeared, leaving only my
wallpaper. I restarted, but this did not restore them. About a half-hour
before I had installed and run Microsoft Autoruns, which had been
mentioned in one of today's Ziff Davis emails. As far as I know I did
nothing to make any changes while Autoruns was up. Any suggestions how
to restore all the icons other than by re-creating them one by one?

PS: If this turns out to be a double post, I beg your pardon. I tried to
send it once but as far as I could tell nothing happened.

Hello Allen,

Rightclick on Desktop. Find arrange your icons or something like that.
Tag show icons.

Bingo! Thanks very much! I had gone to the desktop menu, and somehow I
totally missed that item in the list. (I have an appointment with my
ophthalmologist in three weeks--perhaps I should try to see him sooner.)

Hi Paul,

I've made my icons 'disappear' a few times by clicking off the Show Icons in
that menu.

Still, I've often wondered why there is such a command? Why would someone
NOT want to see their desktop icons?

Maybe Windows98 legacy. When for some reason the theme became garbled some
instructions and a buttom showed up on the screen below the icons. If I
remember well there where also an included applet that rendered real-time
satellite-orbits on the desk (I miss that one) and you wished to see them
on top not below the icons.
