Suddenly, desktop icons don't work properly

We've got Windows 2000 Pro on a laptop [sorry if this is in the wrong
discussion thread - couldn't find a W2000P area] and suddenly some of the
desktop icons
don't work. They are all visible, but when you click on some of them (for
example, Internet Explorer or the recycling bin) the screen refreshes and
then goes back to the way it was without launching any of the apps.
When you click on My Computer or My Documents, the blue desktop (plus
wallpaper) turns white with a message saying Active Desktop Recovery, and a
click box to Restore my Active Desktop (plus some other
instructions/options). Clicking on that restores the appearance of the
desktop, but doesn't do anything to get the icons working again.
This problem suddenly occured while reading an email and trying to download
a photo that had been attached to it (there was nothing wrong with the pic -
it was a family photo that I accessed on another computer).
Any suggestions gratefully received!

Hmmm, microsoft.public.win2000, not too far above the
microsoft.public.windowsxp newsgroups.

You downloaded a virus. This is typical virus behavior.

As to why the photo worked on another computer... perhaps the other computer
had more (or some) sophisticated anti-virus tools.
