IBM T40 will not awake from sleep (sometimes)

I have an IBM T40, which has developed a rather disturbing problem.

I have it set to sleep while im away or close the cover, but
frequently I cannot awake it from sleep - the sleep indicator LED is
lit, and there is disk activity, but the monitor remains dark. I cant
try the wake function key, hit the keyboard, touchpad, enter key, ESC,
tap the power button - none of these will get my screen back.

I have hibernation disabled.

The annoying part is that it doesnt happen all the time, which makes
it hard to debug.

Any debugging hints?

You say this problem has developed. What changed between the time things
worked and the time they didn't? You also say it doesn't always
misbehave, which leads me to believe it might be a hardware problem. I
would call IBM tech support. They are excellent.
