Have a brand new Thinkpad T42, XP Pro, when I got I it immediately loaded
SP2, Norton SystemWorks, Adaware. It has crashed several times with ati2dvag
and ati2mtag errors, a problem with the video driver. I updated the driver no
help. IBM tech support says I need to uninstall SP2 as this is "probably the
culprit". I have surfed many tech forums for this issue and have found
several possible fixes but none has yeilded a good result.

I have uninstalled SP2 today but am now in fear of normal internet surfing.
Has anyone heard of this problem and can you use just the barebone fixes
within SP2 without downloading the whole thing? Thanks

As you have a brand new machine. Then it must be under warranty. Why don't
you ask IBM to look after this problem?Again IBM has web based support
service.

There is not need to be "in fear of normal internet surfing":

If you still want SP2 (?), see this:

I have been running xp pro, on my Thinkpad T23, now for the last 2yrs,
without any PROBLEMS, at all, that was untill, october, when i installed SP2.
1. printer wont print from a web page.
2. cant use system restore, it just tells me windows has encountered a
problem, and needs to shut down.
3. cant open any files or folders because i get the same error, windows has
encountered a problem and needs to shut down.
4. cant open search, and look for any files that i want.

I have posted messages on here, and as off yet, nobody has been able to
offer any advice which comes close to solving my problems. Guess what, they
all reached the same opinion, that its not SP2, causing the problems i have,
then again they would do, would,nt they? I have a daughter, who is in
college, so my laptop at home, is vital for her work, thats what im really
pissed off at.Anyway, i might get alot off crap for what im about to say now,
but i am that desperate, that i have just purchased a book, called, Kiss The
Blue Screen Goodbye, i maybe a small fish in this big sea, but if it solves
my problems who cares?.
Cheers, Chris.

I know you are trying to help, but, to be honest, i have visited them sights,
addmitedly, after i downloaded SP2.But you would have to have a masters
degree in computers, to know, what is the best to download for your computer.
In my book, what you are saying is typical, of what you come across on these
newsgroups, its called PASSING THE BOOK.
Cheers Chris.
p.s
i use newsgroups, through outlook express, posted a message there, no
crap, just honest answers, no fix, thats what kept on coming back, no fix, no
passing the book.

LOL No more soup for you!
Maybe if you dropped the attitude you might get "better" help for your self
induced problems. NO a "masters degree in computers" is not necessary for
maintaining a IBM ThinkPad or any computer for that matter, most of us do
just fine without one. I've been using IBM ThinkPads and PCs since 1996 and
have never needed a degree to maintain them. FYI these MS newsgroups are the
same whether you use CDO or OE or any other newsreader to access them. Hope
you get the "help" you need :)
