XP Pro Repair question

I have an IBM T42 ThinkPad that came with no backup CDs (should have asked
before I bought it but it's too late now). I made the 7 backups from the
preinstalled software that includes the XP Pro OEM. System has been running
very slowly lately; have run Norton IS (no viruses); run daily Adaware and
Spybot; defrag daily after dumping cookies, temps, etc.

Because I never got the backup CDS (IBM wants $45 for a set and I won't give
it to them!) I went and purchased the full, retail version of XP Pro that I
want to put on here after a format. I can get all the latest drivers from
the IBM site but right now I'm away from my home office and want to just do a
repair of the OEM XP that's on here.

Can I do a repair of an OEM XP Pro with a Retail Version? This also has SP2
built into it (the new retail bought version) and I dont' want to put that on
here yet because of massive problems with my desktop and patching the OEM XP
Pro that came with that. Can I just do a "repair" of the OEM that has SP1
built into it with the retail of XP Pro w/SP2 (and not install SP2 at the
same time)??

Thanks in advance for any help. This system is not running right at all and
a backup CD would have been the answer........but I never got one with it
from IBM. btw, this is my last laptop from them. ;)

You don't get to choose installing without SP2, it is part of the OS.
You could do the repair if you use the retail key, but it will not accept
the OEM PK.

Thanks, Michael - something told me that SP2 would somehow find its way on
with a repair but I had hoped there was a way around it.

I'm going to wait until I get back to my home office next week - I can't
take a chance of the entire system coming down like SP2 did with my desktop.
I have most everything backed up - just no time to do a
format/repartition/etc.

I really need to format this system and get rid of the OEM version. That's
providing I don't sell it before I do the format, which is a very strong
option.

Thanks again.
