i386 directory

Stan Brown

My Acer notebook came with XP Pro SP2 installed but only recovery
discs, not an XP disc. I do have the i386 directory of 484 MB
including subdirectories.

1. Can I use i386 to make a bootable disc I might later use to
restore Windows XP?

2. How can I tell whether the i386 directory incorporates SP2?

No, you cannot hack a computer manufacturer's recovery disk
and make a bootable Windows XP CD.

Thanks, but actually I wanted to know if I could use the i386
directory to create a bootable CD-ROM.

You should have a i386 for service pack files after it was upgraded to SP2.

Thanks.

I've burned a copy of the complete i386 and subdirectories to CD,
just for backup. I know certain things can be done from i386
without a Windows XP disc, like turning on Recovery Console.

You can certainly create a bootable cd rom and have the folder on it.
Whether it'll do you any good as other than a backup of the folder is
doubtful.
