recovery console help

need to install recovery console so i can remove lilo by running fixmbr.
then i would upgrade to vista. mCan't do it fro /i386 folder since it says
xp sp2 is newer. Tried 2 methods in kowledge base but they didn't work
either. Would this work though: I have a latop with xp sp2 on it. from the
cmd prompt on the desktop pc could i point it to the laptops /386 directory
to get to cmdcon that way (install it from the laptop to the desktop)?

Probably the easiest thing is to use add/remove to take out SP2 (note
checkbox for 'show updates) then do the install of the RC, then reinstall SP2.

don't think that would work. it ask for password and this is a compaq with
only restore cds.
