I want to use external speakers and USB headphones in harmony

My PC audio used to be real simple. I would insert the USB cable to my
Plantronics GameCom Pro 1 headset and sound would go through the headset.
When I removed the USB connector, the external speakers would play sound.

For some reason now, I have to go into Sounds and Audio Device Properties
and specifically choose the Default Playback device. I would like to get
back to
the way my PC used to work.

My audio is C-Media AC97 onboard my motherboard.

What do I need to do to get back to the way the PC used to work?
