Can't play sound thru my USB headphone

I have a GN Technocom 503 USB headset, my sound card is SoundMax Digital
Audio. I am running Win XP. When I select the USB audio device for playback,
I do not get any sound. If I choose SoundMax, the sound comes out through the
speakers, even though I choose Stereo Headphones as the output device. Any
suggestions? Thanks
