I need to know about Quicktime necessity

I need to know more about my need for Quicktime. It was installed on
my computer when I purchased it. Add/Remove programs says it was last
used 6 months ago, when computer was new. It was putting an icon in my
task tray, so I stopped that. Noticed it was back and upon checking,
saw that the original entry for the startup was still there and
disabled, but another new entry for Quicktime had been added and was
checked.

Do I need Quicktime? The fact that it has not been used since I have
had the computer leads me to think, no. But I do have an iPod,
although I do not use iTunes, only the iPod updater. I was told
Quicktime was necessary for the iPod?

I really try to keep my computer clean of anything I don't need. Is
there any downside to getting rid of Quicktime?

Thanks!

Quicktime is a Apple media player similar to Windows Media Player. You need
it if you want to view Quicktime media formats, such as video. The Windows
Media Player does not support the current Quicktime format. The usage data
in Add/Remove programs is not an accurate reflection of actual usage.

Usually, but not always, web sites that have Quicktime video also offer the
option to use Windows Media Player format.

I do not know why the Notification area icon came back -- mine has not.
Nor, do I know if your need Quicktime for the iPod.

IMO, there is no harm in uninstalling Quicktime. I would check what came
with your computer. Mine included an application CD to reinstall the
pre-installed applications. Also, you can always re-install the free
version of Quicktime from the Apple Quicktime site {note there is also a pay
versions. I suspect the pre-installed version you have is the free one}.

Even if you really hadn't used Quicktime for months, you are not
telling us if this is so because you haven't viewed any files that
require it (e.g. .mov), or because you have a substitute. If the
former, then do you really want to assume that you will NEVER want to
view such files?

In any event, there are several alternatives for viewing Quicktime-type
files, such as Media Player Classic.

Thanks for all the info. I don't even use WMP since I use Winamp for
music. At this time I don't watch videos either. But, it sounds as if
there is no real harm in leaving QuickTime installed. I was not
completely sure what it did and did not like the way it came back to
the sys tray by putting another entry for itself into the start menu
after I had unchecked it.

I'll keep an eye on it and if it does this again, I may have to get rid
of it and go from there.

No, IrfanView does not invoke Quicktime.

IrfanView uses a PlugIn for .mov files.

OK, but this doesn't preclude the possibility that the PLUGIN
interfaces with some QT component. I'm not being argumentative, it's
just that I think (but not sure) I recall that when using Irfanview for
QT files, the skin made me think of a QT skin, and this in turn made me
wonder if IV just hooks up with QT.

No. IrfanView has nothing to do with Apple's QuickTime.

Irfan Skiljan, the guy who wrote IrfanView, also made Quicktime.dll, the
QuickTime PlugIn for IrfanView.

QUICKTIME.DLL - This PlugIn allows IrfanView to play Apple Quicktime
formats: MOV, MacPICT, QTIF and FLI/FLC.

QUICKTIME.DLL may be what you were thinking of.

Perhaps. Thanks for the explanation.
