How is quicktime starting?

P

Paul

I recently installed quicktime on my xp system. I see that at startup in xp that
quicktime is doing it's automatic update thing. It just popped up a dialog.

I know how to turn off auto update in quicktime -- that's not the issue.

What is bothering me is that I don't see how quicktime is starting up.

I have the sysinternals programs autostart and process explorer. I don't see any
Apple software in autostart, and there appear to be no quicktime tasks in
process explorer. How is quicktime starting up? Some sort of new stealth mode?

That's the first thing I looked for, it's just not there. I've been killing this
thing for years, and this is the first time I can't figure it out.

Try looking in the Registry at
HKLM\SW\M$\Windows\CV\Run or HKCU\SW\M$\Windows\CV\Run
(I've shortened the names down a bunch. You can use your imagination.)

Quicktime has an option to not display the quicktime taskbar icon. The
option checked in quicktimes options will override turning it off in the
registry or msconfig. Go to Edit > Preferences > Quicktime Preferences >
Advanced and under Tray Icon untick the checkbox next to "Install QuickTime
icon in system tray"
Hope this helps

It's not there. Perhaps it is doing a trick with RunOnce. Perhaps no one knows
outside of Apple at this point.

I see qttask.exe under run... perhaps the best approach will be to uninstall
quicktime, reboot, then reinstall to see if options are available to disable
it from loading when windows starts.

There are no options in QT to disable it from loading when windows starts.
Auto Runs download from MS will give the option to disable it from start up.

The only thing that opens when windows starts having to do with quicktime is
the taskbar icon qttask.exe. If the option in preferences to install this
icon is selected in the quicktime program itself, the program will start. I
have seen the registry entry and msconfig option for qttask reappear after
deleting/disabling the option, due to the program overwriting that action
the next time quicktime was opened. Directions for disabling qttask in the
quicktime program itself are listed in my original reply at 12:49 cst.

My experience is that even if you disable it in the registry or via MSCONFIG
the next time QuickTime runs qttask.exe is re-enabled. My solution is to
simply rename qttask.exe to qttask.exe_disable and it will never run again
(at least until you install a new version of QuickTime). By default it's in
C:\PROGRAM FILES\QUICKTIME

I haven't experienced any issues doing this on various systems.

Isn't there an option in the QuickTime preferences pages to disable this?

I would think that Apple's support forums might have much better answers
upon this subject. If they're really stumped, we can probably sort this out
for you, but that would be the right place to go, and probably useful
feedback for them. =)

Yes there is, as I posted directions in my original reply which I will
repost here...

This will disable the qttask.exe program from opening up as qttask.exe is
simply just a taskbar icon for easy access to those who don't want to
navigate through the start menu or open up the program for preferences.
Best of luck to all,
-kenkcj

While this will indeed stop the QT icon from appearing in the tray it does
NOT prevent QTTASK.EXE from running at startup. To confirm this you can
disable the tray icon via the QT Control Panel and then run MSCONFIG and
you will see that QTTASK.EXE is still flagged to run at startup.

Although it is flagged for startup in msconfig, does it ever actually
run? Look in Task Manager; is qttask.exe listed?

I just read all the replies and it's interesting that none of the above
forementioned things seem to help. Very weird indeed!! Sounds like QT has
been stuffed up through installation.

God Bless... :)

It appears to run and exit. If you look in the Windows\Prefetch directory
and check the timestamp on the QTTASK file you will see that it will be the
time your system was last booted.

Quicktime starts up when you access a file associated with it. Until then
it's not running (aside from the update check, if enabled). Very similar to
MediaPlayer which doesn't do anything until you click on an associated file.
and then it starts.
